Project TAHA was founded in December 2024 by human rights lawyer Maria Aftab Kari to take on a category of case that is politically inconvenient, legally complex and expensive to fight. Most of our work is pro bono. We are funded by individual donors.
Our clients include political prisoners, immigrants detained by ICE for unlawful reasons, and activists and journalists punished for what they say and write. When people are dehumanized and made invisible, they are easier to overlook and abandon. That is where Project TAHA steps in to fight each case on three fronts:
We litigate. Project TAHA regularly appears in federal and immigration courts across the country. We have also filed petitions before regional and international tribunals including the Inter-American Commission for Human Rights, the International Criminal Court and the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention.
We tell the client’s story, in their own words, in mainstream and alternative media. Project TAHA’s cases and clients regularly appear in broadcast and print mainstream media including CNN, New York Times and The Guardian. We also regularly appear in alternative media including Zeteo and DropSite News.
We take our cases to legislators to effect long-lasting policy change. Project TAHA has briefed Senator offices and regularly meets with lawmakers in the United States Congress to advocate on behalf of communities, causes and cases.
Project TAHA does not make our clients bear the cost of lawyering, litigation and advocacy. But these things are expensive. Your donation helps keep us going.
